Nomos Refines Its Iconic Tangente

At the 2026 Watches & Wonders, Nomos Glashütte shifted focus from the bold Club Sport Neomatik Worldtimers of 2025 to more refined iterations of its core collection. Among these is the Tangente Neomatik 38 Update, which successfully integrates the brand's patented peripheral ring date complication into a smaller, more wearable 38.5mm case. This new model stands as a prime candidate for those seeking a dress watch that balances elegance with practicality.

The Tangente Legacy

Since its debut in 1992 as part of the 'Big Four' alongside the Orion, Ludwig, and Tetra, the Tangente has been considered Nomos' flagship. Its flat, coin-like case features an ultra-thin bezel, sharp angular lugs, and a typeface inspired by 1930s Bauhaus-era German dial designs. Over the years, the Tangente evolved from a manual-winding time-only model to include a standard date aperture at 6 o'clock, a power reserve indicator, and, in 2018, the innovative ring date complication powered by the in-house automatic calibre DUW 6101.

The original DUW 6101 movement, with its 35.2mm diameter, was limited to larger cases like the Tangente 41 (40.5mm) and the Metro 41 (2021). While well-received, the long lugs of the 40.5mm Tangente made it wear larger than its dimensions suggest. Now, Nomos has rescaled the date ring to fit a more compact case, reducing the movement's diameter to 34mm while maintaining its slim 3.6mm height. The result is a more balanced case profile of just 7.4mm, firmly placing the watch in refined dress watch territory.

Ring Date Innovation

Nomos excels at simplifying complications, and the ring date is a prime example. Instead of cutting a window into the dial, which can disrupt symmetry, the date is displayed around the periphery. A series of cutouts on the dial and a contrasting disc beneath frame the current date, revealing the entire month at a glance without cluttering the dial. This maintains the clean, uncluttered Bauhaus spirit the brand is known for.

The new stainless steel models are available with classic silver or refreshing forest-green dials. The date is highlighted in red, and the recessed small seconds counter at 6 o'clock features a snailed finish for contrast. The forest-green dial pairs silver hour markers, indices, and inscriptions with slender rhodium-plated hands, while the silver dial uses black markings. Both feature a golden 'neomatik' inscription at noon. A playful detail: date numbers are inverted from the 9th to the 22nd of the month, adding a touch of whimsy to the rational Bauhaus design.

Inside the DUW 6101

Powering the watch is the ultra-thin, in-house calibre DUW 6101, featuring Nomos' automatic Neomatik movement with an integrated date mechanism built into the mainplate. The movement offers bidirectional winding and a bidirectional quick-set date, with a short 90-minute window between 11:15 and 12:45 when adjustment is not possible. Beating at 21,600vph, it is regulated to six positions and provides a 42-hour power reserve. The classic Glashütte three-quarter plate is decorated with Glashütte ribbing, blued screws, and golden inscriptions.

Both steel models are paired with black Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan straps, secured by a winged steel pin buckle. Produced by the Horween Leather Company in Chicago, this dense horsehide is smooth, resilient, water-repellent, and breathable.

Nomos has clearly responded to feedback calling for more compact dimensions. The Tangente Neomatik 38 Update will satisfy those with smaller wrists who don't want to miss out on the Update complication. The forest-green dial model retails for EUR 3,760, while the silver dial is slightly less at EUR 3,680.
