Patek Philippe Ref. 6105G-001 Celestial: An Astronomical Masterpiece
Patek Philippe 6105G-001 Celestial: An Astronomical Masterpiece
Patek Philippe has unveiled a new celestial-themed timepiece that pairs a substantial 18K white gold case with an equally astronomical price tag. Unlike the brand's highly sought-after Nautilus, which commands a premium on the secondary market despite its relatively simple movement, the Ref. 6105G-001 Celestial brings genuine horological innovations that help justify its steep cost.
Case Design and Dimensions
The watch features a space-module-inspired case with two crowns, a solid caseback, and cutouts on the bezel, flanks, and back. This design not only gives the watch a distinctive aesthetic but also reduces overall weight—a practical consideration given the heavy 18K white gold construction. The case measures 47mm in diameter and 12.39mm in thickness, making it substantial on the wrist. It is slightly smaller than the ultra-complicated Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300 (47.7mm x 16.07mm), but still imposing.
Movement and Complications
Powering the watch is Patek Philippe's caliber 240 C LU CL LCSO, a movement that measures 38mm x 7.93mm—hence the need for a large case. It comprises 51 jewels, a Spiromax balance spring, a Gyromax balance wheel, and a 22K gold off-center micro-rotor. Operating at 3Hz, the movement delivers a maximum power reserve of 48 hours. It took five years to develop and is the subject of six pending patent applications.
The 6105G-001 Celestial offers 11 complications:
- Celestial display
- Sunrise and sunset time indications
- Summer time/winter time correction
- Hours and minutes of mean solar time
- Sky chart
- Ellipse representing the visible part of the sky for a given latitude
- Meridian
- Time of meridian passage of Sirius and of the Moon
- Angular motion of the Moon
- Date by hand
- Moon phases
Dial and Display
The dial is a sapphire crystal that depicts the sky as seen from Geneva, showing the exact configuration of the northern hemisphere. An ellipse frames the portion of the sky visible from Geneva and other cities at the same latitude. The apparent movement of the stars, along with the phases and orbit of the Moon, are displayed. Skeletonized hour and minute hands are varnished white and made of white gold. Sunset and sunrise times are indicated by additional hands. The date is shown on a peripheral disk with a red varnished hand. The dial layers a rotating sky chart, lunar display, meridian tracking, and a floating horizon ellipse that mirrors what’s visible at a given latitude.
Strap and Final Thoughts
The watch is completed with an integrated black composite strap featuring an X-shaped pattern and a patented fold-over clasp in white gold—a departure from the glossy leather typically seen on Patek's grand complications. While the case may appear oversized on smaller wrists, the watch is relatively thin compared to other complicated timepieces like the Sky Moon Tourbillon or the Grandmaster Chime. The retail price is 7,610.
