Citizen's Indigo Washi Paper Dial: A Fusion of Ancient Craft and Modern Precision
The Citizen Indigo Washi: A Limited Edition Masterpiece
Citizen's flagship chronometer line introduces a striking new addition: The Citizen Indigo Washi. This limited edition watch showcases an indigo-dyed washi paper dial, created using traditional Japanese craftsmanship that dates back centuries. It pairs this ancient artistry with the brand's renowned high-end quartz technology, offering exceptional accuracy of five seconds per year or better. The watch is housed in a scratch-resistant titanium case and features a perpetual calendar, making it a compelling choice for collectors who appreciate both heritage and precision.
Traditional Craftsmanship in a Modern Timepiece
The dial is the centerpiece of this watch. Citizen collaborated with Watanabe's, an indigo dyeing workshop in Tokushima, a region famous for its Awa indigo production. The dye is derived from fermented indigo leaves, a process known as sukumo, which has been used since the Heian period over a millennium ago. The pattern is achieved through a technique called tsutsumaki shibori, or pole wrap tie-dying. The washi paper is wrapped around a cylinder and gently wrinkled to resist the dye, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind pattern on each dial. A clear protective layer covers the paper, on which the dial markings and golden eagle emblem are printed.
Exceptional Quartz Accuracy
At the heart of The Citizen Indigo Washi is the Caliber A060 movement. This solar-powered quartz movement features active temperature compensation, calibrated to each individual oscillator, ensuring accuracy within five seconds per year. This level of precision is class-leading, especially now that other high-accuracy quartz lines have been discontinued. The movement also includes a perpetual calendar and a power-saving mode that can last up to 18 months when fully charged.
Durable and Elegant Case
The 40mm case is crafted from Super Titanium with a Duratect coating, which provides a hardness of 1,000 Vickers—five times harder than stainless steel. The case is polished using a technique similar to zaratsu polishing, resulting in a distortion-free mirror finish. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters and features a sapphire crystal. Each of the 200 limited pieces is individually numbered on the case back.
Authenticity and Buying Considerations
When purchasing a high-end quartz watch like The Citizen, it's important to verify authenticity. Look for the unique dial pattern, the case back numbering, and the official documentation. Given the limited production of 200 pieces, this model is likely to be sought after. It is scheduled for release in August 2026 at Citizen boutiques and retailers, with a price of ,000 before taxes.
