Minerva Unveiled Chronograph Limited Edition 30 in Yellow Gold: Hands-On Review
Introducing the Yellow Gold Minerva Unveiled Chronograph
Minerva's Unveiled Chronograph series flips traditional watchmaking on its head. Instead of hiding the movement beneath a dial, the brand reverses the architecture, placing the chronograph mechanism and its hand-finished components front and center. This latest edition takes the larger 43mm case and dresses it in full 18k yellow gold, paired with a brown-coated movement for a warmer, more luxurious look.
The Case: A Golden Statement
Measuring 43mm in diameter and 14.78mm thick, the case commands attention. It's not just for show—the size provides ample room to showcase the intricate mechanics. The 18k yellow gold case features Minerva's signature fluted bezel, a nod to the manufacture's 1930s chronographs. Satin-brushed and polished surfaces alternate, while chamfered lugs soften the profile.
One of the most intriguing aspects is the five sapphire openings in the case middle. These allow light to enter from the sides and offer unique views of the pillar-mounted architecture. The fluted gold crown integrates the monopusher, and a domed, box-shaped sapphire crystal protects the dial. The solid gold caseback is laser-engraved with an image of the historic Minerva manufacture in Villeret, along with the RFV (Robert Frères Villeret) logo and Minerva's arrow. Water resistance is 30 meters.
The Dial: A Transparent Stage
As with previous Unveiled models, the dial is intentionally minimal—almost nonexistent. A skeletonized sapphire outer ring holds Super-LumiNova hour markers, while three open rings cross the center. At 9 o'clock, a yellow-gold hand indicates running seconds, and at 3 o'clock, the 30-minute chronograph counter features a yellow-gold-coated hand with a white arrow.
The central area is dominated by yellow-gold-coated hour and minute hands with white luminescent material, plus a central chronograph seconds hand in white. All sit above the exposed movement, allowing you to see the column wheel, going train, and balance in action while reading the time. The effect is mesmerizing.
The new colorway is particularly striking. The brown-coated German silver plates and bridges provide a warm backdrop, contrasting with the yellow-gold-colored going train and case. It's a more luxurious take compared to the cooler, blue-accented 2024 edition.
The Movement: Reversed Calibre M17.26
Powering this timepiece is the hand-wound Calibre M17.26, a monopusher chronograph with column wheel and horizontal coupling. It comprises 291 components and measures 38.4mm in diameter and 7.7mm thick—large enough to appreciate without a loupe, though a magnifier enhances the experience.
The movement's reversed construction places the regulating organ, going train, bridges, and chronograph components on the dial side. Minerva's signature V-shaped bridge dominates the view, finished in the same brown tone as the plates. The going train is yellow-gold-colored and circular-grained, with extensive hand-finishing including carefully executed bevels.
The movement beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5Hz) and offers approximately 50 hours of power reserve. The chronograph is operated via the single pusher integrated into the crown: press once to start, again to stop, and a third time to reset.
Buying Tips and Authenticity
This limited edition of 30 pieces is a collector's dream, combining Minerva's traditional chronograph construction with unconventional architecture and meticulous hand-finishing. When purchasing, ensure the watch comes with its original certificate and packaging, and verify the serial number against Minerva's records. Given the high price point, consider buying from authorized dealers or reputable pre-owned platforms to avoid counterfeits.
