Legare Chapter 1 AGP Inverted: A Modern Tribute to Albert-Gustave Piguet

Introducing Legare: A New Haute Horlogerie Brand

Just ahead of Geneva Watch Days, a new name has entered the world of high-end watchmaking. Legare, founded by Wei Koh and Guillaume Tetu, brings together decades of industry experience and a passion for horological innovation. Koh is well known as the founder of Revolution and The Rake, while Tetu has held key roles at Hautlence, TAG Heuer, and Ralph Lauren. Their combined expertise and extensive network have culminated in a debut timepiece that is both technically impressive and deeply rooted in watchmaking history.

The brand's first release, the Chapter 1 AGP Inverted, draws direct inspiration from a rare pocket watch crafted by Albert-Gustave Piguet in 1932. At just 17 years old, Piguet was a student at the Vallée de Joux School of Watchmaking when he created a timepiece featuring two large split bi-metallic balance wheels. Their rates were averaged using a differential, a concept that was ahead of its time. Only six examples of this pocket watch were ever completed, making it a true collector's item.

The Chapter 1 AGP Inverted: A Contemporary Evolution

Legare's vision for the Chapter 1 is to explore what might have happened if Piguet's innovative movement concept had continued to evolve. The result is an entirely original movement architecture that relies on two independent oscillators, distinguishing it from resonance watches. This design poses a fascinating question: what would a modern watch look like if this approach had become the standard? The Chapter 1 answers that question with a stunning, contemporary interpretation.

The movement is the undeniable centerpiece of the watch. As the name suggests, it is inverted, allowing the twin balance wheels to be visible on the dial side. Each balance wheel beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and their rates are averaged via a differential. To achieve a compact size, Legare utilized side-angled lever escapements for each balance, a technique more commonly found in tourbillon movements. This allows the entire mechanism to fit comfortably within a 37.5mm case.

Case and Design: Art Deco Elegance in Titanium

While the movement is a showstopper, the case itself is a testament to the creators' refined taste. Crafted from Grade 5 titanium, the case measures just 37.5mm in diameter and 9.95mm in height, making it a relatively compact and wearable piece. The design features clear Art Deco influences, with a stepped bezel and sharply downturned lugs that give it an architectural feel. Concave bevels along the case lines highlight the meticulous finishing and attention to detail.

Swiss Craftsmanship with Local Collaboration

Legare is not just Swiss-made; it is a product of regional collaboration. The movement is manufactured by PURTEC, while UM2 and Polissage des Franches-Montagnes handle the machining and finishing of the case and buckle. Dial production is managed by Fabrika. Additionally, product development, sourcing, final assembly, and quality control are overseen by GLS2F in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This ensures that all partners are within 100 kilometers of Legare's headquarters in Neuchâtel, fostering a tight-knit, quality-focused production process.

Availability and Pricing

The Chapter 1 AGP is offered in two distinct variants. The 'Elegant' version showcases the caliber in untreated German Silver, while the 'Darth' edition features a black rhodium finish. Both are limited to 25 pieces each, with a retail price of CHF 81,944. For those seeking a rare and innovative timepiece, this is a unique opportunity.

Buying Tips and Authenticity Notes

When considering a high-end timepiece like the Legare Chapter 1, it's essential to purchase from authorized dealers or directly from the brand to ensure authenticity. Given the limited production, provenance and documentation are crucial. Always verify the serial number and request a certificate of authenticity. For replica watch enthusiasts, this model serves as an excellent reference for understanding advanced movement architecture and finishing techniques.
