Blancpain has unveiled a special edition of the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe to commemorate its 70th anniversary. The new reference 5903 draws direct inspiration from a 1968 Bathyscaphe, reviving its balanced proportions and distinctive steel bezel design. This limited edition is restricted to 300 individually numbered pieces.

Design and Case

The 37.4mm stainless-steel case is a faithful recreation of the 1968 model's dimensions, measuring 12.3mm thick and 46.5mm from lug to lug. The mid-case is slender with curved surfaces and polished finishing, while the sharply shaped lugs enhance its vintage character. The bezel is a standout feature: its steel structure extends close to the glass-box sapphire crystal, recreating the original architecture. The ceramic insert with lacquered numerals replaces the vintage Hesalite, offering modern durability without compromising the late-1960s look.

Dial and Hands

The sunburst meteor grey dial provides a subdued backdrop for baton-shaped hands and applied 18k white-gold indices, both treated with vintage-coloured Super-LumiNova. The mid-20th-century Blancpain logo adds authenticity. A date aperture sits at 3 o'clock, and the narrow bezel leaves ample space for the dial, making the 37.4mm case feel larger than its size suggests.

Movement and Performance

Inside beats the in-house automatic calibre 1150, a slim 3.25mm movement that enables the case proportions. Twin barrels deliver a 100-hour power reserve, and the movement runs at 21,600 VPH with a silicon hairspring. It comprises 210 components and 28 jewels. The sapphire caseback reveals the movement, featuring an openworked 18k gold rotor inspired by the original Fifty Fathoms.

Strap and Wearability

The watch comes on a hand-stitched chocolate calfskin strap with a pin buckle. While leather may seem unconventional for a 300m diver, it reflects the Bathyscaphe's civilian role within the Fifty Fathoms family. The leather will develop a natural patina over time, adding to the vintage appeal.
