Seiko Presage Classic Series Craftsmanship HCC005 and HCC006: Enamel and Urushi Lacquer Dials

Seiko Presage Classic Series: A Tribute to Japanese Craftsmanship

The Presage Classic collection has long served as Seiko's platform for celebrating traditional Japanese decorative arts. Within this line, the Craftsmanship series highlights centuries-old techniques such as enamel, porcelain, and urushi lacquer. This year, Seiko adds two new models that pay homage to a significant milestone in the company's history: the 1913 Laurel, Japan's first wristwatch. The new references HCC005 and HCC006 reinterpret key design elements of that historic timepiece, combining classical styling with handcrafted dials.

Design and Case Details

Both watches share the same case construction, measuring 39.6mm in diameter and 12.4mm thick, with water resistance up to 30 meters. The enamel model (HCC005) features a stainless steel case with a super-hard coating, while the urushi lacquer version (HCC006) is finished with a warm yellow gold-colored plating. Each watch is fitted with a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and a screw-down exhibition caseback, allowing a view of the movement.

HCC005: Traditional Enamel Dial

The HCC005 revisits the Laurel's distinctive appearance with a glossy white enamel dial crafted using traditional techniques. Fine enamel powder is applied to a copper base and fired repeatedly at temperatures approaching 800°C, resulting in a surface prized for its depth, permanence, and resistance to fading. The dial is produced under the supervision of master enamel artisan Mitsuru Yokosawa, with assistance from Kazunori Uchiyama, ensuring the continuation of this rare craft. The dial features elegant Arabic numerals, including the characteristic red "12" that was a signature of Seiko's historic wristwatch. A blue handset complements the white enamel, and a 24-hour subdial sits at 6 o'clock.

HCC006: Urushi Lacquer Dial

The HCC006 retains the Laurel-inspired typography and layout but interprets the design through the demanding art of urushi lacquer. This technique involves applying successive layers of hand-applied lacquer, each followed by polishing, to create a deep, lustrous finish. The dial is produced under the supervision of renowned lacquer master Isshu Tamura, with execution by Toshikazu Tsuji, Mitsuki Tsuji, and their workshop. The result is a deep black dial with gold-colored numerals, indices, and hands, exuding a rich, traditional aesthetic.

Movement and Performance

Both watches are powered by Seiko's modern manufacture Calibre 6R5H. This automatic movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a 72-hour power reserve. The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback, allowing enthusiasts to appreciate its finishing.

Strap and Wearability

The watches come on a supple oil-tanned leather strap sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries, secured with a three-fold deployant clasp. This combination ensures comfort and durability for daily wear.

Buying Tips and Authenticity Notes

When purchasing a Seiko Presage Craftsmanship watch, always buy from authorized dealers or Seiko boutiques to ensure authenticity. These limited-production pieces feature handcrafted dials, so minor variations are normal and add to their uniqueness. Check for the correct reference number and serial numbers, and be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, as counterfeit models may lack the intricate detailing of genuine enamel and urushi dials.
