After sharing my first Behrens watch—the Orion I—on a forum and receiving overwhelming positive feedback, I was motivated to explore more from this Chinese brand. This time, I decided to add another piece to my collection: the new KWH Master Series in tantalum, unveiled at this year's Geneva Watch Days. As a proud supporter of domestic watchmaking, I couldn't resist this innovative release.

Why I Chose the KWH Series

At Geneva Watch Days, Behrens showcased two new lines: the Entropy and the KWH series. I was intrigued by both, but ultimately chose the KWH for two reasons. First, the previous collaboration model was slightly over my budget. Second, the limited edition of just 9 pieces was already sold out to VIPs before I could even try. So, when the new KWH was announced, I pre-ordered immediately—no hesitation.

Design Inspiration: A Nod to Vintage Electroplating

The design of the KWH is inspired by a vintage square electroplated watch that both Behrens' founder, Mr. Lin, and renowned independent watchmaker Vianney Halter share in their collections. Interestingly, I have a personal connection to this style: as a child, I often watched my father tinker with electroplated watches. It feels like fate that I now own a modern interpretation of that very design.

Case and Wearability

The rectangular case measures 34mm by 41mm, making it surprisingly comfortable for my smaller wrist. The thickness is well-balanced, and after wearing it daily, I can confirm it never feels bulky or awkward. Compared to my Orion I, this KWH gets much more wrist time due to its superior comfort and unique charm.

Dial and Display: A Playful Mechanical Spectacle

Behrens is known for its creative dials, and the KWH does not disappoint. The openwork dial reveals the intricate movement, showcasing the brand's signature mechanical aesthetic. But the real highlight is the time display: minutes are shown via a roller on the right side, while the hours are cleverly hidden within the bracelet links.

For example, if the time is 5:50, the largest white dot among the series on the bracelet indicates the hour. These dots are coated with luminous material, so night reading is a breeze. When you wind the watch, the dots move in sync—a delightful nod to the classic Snake game, where the snake 'eats' dots. This feature adds an element of fun and interactivity that sets Behrens apart.

Additionally, a power reserve indicator sits at the bottom left of the dial, allowing you to monitor the remaining energy at a glance.

Caseback Surprises: Moon Phase and Calendar

The caseback hides even more functionality: a moon phase window and a date display. These complications are elegantly integrated, keeping the overall design clean yet feature-rich. The openwork areas let sunlight through, creating a beautiful play of light and shadow.

Material Options: Ceramic vs. Tantalum

This year's KWH comes in two versions: ceramic and tantalum. I chose the tantalum model for its deep matte finish, which suits my preference for understated elegance in a professional setting. The blue-green ceramic version is more eye-catching and vibrant, but both materials have their own appeal. Tantalum is a rare and dense metal, offering a unique tactile experience that few watches provide.

Movement: The BM06 Co-Developed with Vianney Halter

At the heart of the KWH is the manual-winding BM06 caliber, developed in collaboration with Vianney Halter. Halter is an independent watchmaker whose creations command astronomical prices, making this partnership a significant achievement for Behrens. The movement is finely finished, and for enthusiasts who appreciate haute horlogerie, this offers incredible value—a chance to own a piece co-designed by a legend without the six-figure price tag.

Final Thoughts: A Triumph for Chinese Watchmaking

After wearing the KWH for some time, I am thoroughly impressed. Its innovative design, interactive features, master-level movement, and premium tantalum material make it a standout in my collection. Behrens continues to prove that Chinese watchmaking can compete on the global stage, delivering originality and craftsmanship that deserve recognition. I look forward to seeing what they create next.
