Wren has carved a niche for itself by pushing the boundaries of dive watch design. The latest iteration, the Diver One Abyss, takes a bold step into darkness with a dial coated in Musou Black, one of the blackest pigments commercially available. This isn't just a black dial; it's an almost total absence of light, creating a visual effect that's both striking and unique.

The Magic of Musou Black

Developed by Koyo Orient Japan in 2020, Musou Black is an acrylic paint that absorbs 99.4% of visible light. When applied to the dial of the Diver One Abyss, it creates a surface that appears not as black, but as a void – an empty space within the watch case. The effect is enhanced by the sandwich dial construction, where hour markers and the minute track are cut out of the upper Musou Black layer to reveal Swiss Super-LumiNova beneath. The aqua-colored lume appears to hover above the abyss, with no shadows or reflections to distract the eye.

Case and Build Quality

The Abyss is built on Wren's established 41mm Diver One platform. The stainless steel case is coated with a clear DLC (diamond-like carbon) layer, which increases hardness and scratch resistance while maintaining the natural look of steel. The case measures 41mm in diameter, 47mm lug-to-lug, and 13.3mm thick, including the domed sapphire crystal. A signed screw-down crown ensures 200 meters of water resistance, making it a true dive watch. The solid caseback features a raised, polished wren emblem and is individually numbered for the first 100 pieces.

Dial and Lume Design

The dial is the star of the show. The Musou Black surface is so dark that it seems to disappear, leaving only the aqua markers and hands visible. The color choice is a nod to Wren's first watch, the Diver One Aqua, and it's used consistently across the indices, hands, minute track, logo, and depth rating. The unidirectional ceramic bezel also features a fully lumed 60-minute scale, with the lume color matched to the aqua dial markings for a cohesive look in low-light conditions.

Movement and Straps

Inside beats the Sellita SW200, a reliable Swiss automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve. It's a proven workhorse that fits the Diver One's straightforward, tool-watch ethos. Wren includes two strap options with every Abyss: a flat-link stainless steel bracelet with the same clear DLC coating, and a fitted black FKM rubber strap. The rubber strap visually merges with the black bezel, intensifying the abyss effect, while the bracelet offers a more structured look.
