Royter Legacy Nova Edition: A New Chapter in Independent Watchmaking

Introducing the Royter Legacy Nova Edition

Brooklyn-based independent watchmaker Dan Royter has taken a bold new direction with the Legacy Series Nova Edition, a stark departure from his previous portfolio of chronographs. This debut piece in the brand's new chapter combines a hand-engraved, burgundy lacquered silver dial with a high-end movement from Andreas Strehler, all housed in a mid-sized steel case. The Nova represents a significant leap for the budding American independent in terms of design, decoration, and price.

Initial Thoughts on the Nova

The artistry of the Nova is impressive, especially considering Royter's humble beginnings with white-label ETA 7750-powered chronographs. For a one-man operation, the launch of the Nova signals the end of the DR-02 chronograph, which had been the brand's identity until now. The recent explosion of independent watchmaking has focused on three-hand watches with finely decorated movements and artful dials, and the Nova fits squarely into this genre.

The demand for such watches has grown faster than the supply, making pieces from blue-chip brands like Dufour, Voutilainen, and Rexhep Rexhepi unobtainable and raising the floor for less-established brands. This context helps explain, though not justify, the stainless steel Nova's starting price of US,000. While this is a significant jump from the brand's earlier offerings, the watch is a cut above anything in Royter's back catalogue. For comparison, Christiaan van der Klaauw's Venus Annual Calendar uses a closely related UhrTeil calibre with automatic winding and a planetarium module in an 18k rose gold case for approximately the same price. However, given the popularity of personalised dials, the market may bear this price.

The Hand-Engraved Dial

The dial begins as a silver plate that Mr Royter painstakingly freehand-engraves to create a starburst effect, which is then sealed with 13 layers of burgundy lacquer. This process takes about 20 hours per dial. The style of finishing is customisable, ensuring each Nova is unique. The dial features approximately 400 rhombuses, each taking four to six strokes with the graver to form, which translates to about three minutes per rhombus. The Roman numerals are even more painstaking: Royter starts with another silver disk, frosts and gilds it, then uses a graver to unearth the lustrous white silver for contrast against the gold. Four mirror-polished functional screws connect the hour ring to the dial base, while four more fasten plates engraved with “DAN ROYTER” and “NEW YORK”.

Hands and Case

The arrow hands, though fashioned from steel rather than a precious metal, are executed to a standard befitting the dial. They are reminiscent of diamond-turned Grand Seiko handsets, but the slightly rounded chamfers hint at manual finishing. After being cut from a sheet of steel, the hands are chamfered manually using hand files and peg wood, as is common on fine Swiss watch movements. The seconds hand is nicely rounded, and the hand stack is finished with a mirror-polished centre cap.

Despite the elaborate and unusually thick dial, the watch is moderately sized at just 9.7 mm tall and under 40 mm in diameter. The case construction uses separate lugs mounted to the case, somewhat like a Lange case.

A Swiss Heart: The BNR-01 Movement

Inside, the cal. BNR-01 bears many hallmarks of UhrTeil's general-purpose automatic calibre powering the Strehler Sirna, CvdK Venus, and some recent Vianney Halter watches. The full-sized movement has a 30 mm diameter, a free-sprung balance, a distinctive Geneva-style stud carrier, and a 60-hour mainspring. Though not in-house, the manually wound BNR-01 is a bespoke movement designed with the aid of Lee Yuen-Rapati, who has been involved in other independent projects. The greatest functional changes are a rearranged train, indirect sweep seconds, and lack of automatic winding. It also hacks.

UhrTeil ships these movements as kits, with final decoration, assembly, and adjustment performed in Brooklyn. Like all Strehler movements, construction is thoroughly high-end, though Royter's decoration is slightly more elaborate than usual, with sharp interior angles fashioned by hand-files and polished with wood and abrasive rather than diamond-cut on a CNC mill.

Buying Tips and Authenticity Notes

When considering the Royter Legacy Nova Edition, it's essential to verify authenticity due to its high value and limited production. Purchase directly from Royter or an authorised dealer. Each watch is individually engraved and numbered, so request documentation and provenance. Be wary of replicas that may attempt to mimic the hand-engraved dial and movement finishing. The movement should display the BNR-01 calibre with Geneva-style stud carrier and free-sprung balance. Given the 20-hour engraving process, any imperfections in the engraving are part of the charm, but quality should be consistent with the price point.
