Otsuka Lotec No. 8: A Tokyo Artisan’s Industrial Timepiece

In the heart of Tokyo, Jiro Katayama runs a one-person watchmaking atelier that consistently produces some of the most distinctive timepieces in the industry. His latest creation, the Otsuka Lotec No. 8, continues his tradition of blending futuristic aesthetics with industrial design cues. Drawing inspiration from analog gauges, retro cameras, and vintage tools, this watch reflects Katayama’s background as a car and product designer, resulting in a piece that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

Case and Design

At the 12 o’clock position, a barely noticeable seconds disc makes a full rotation every 90 seconds instead of the standard 60. While this disc doesn’t offer precise time-setting assistance, its continuous rotation serves as a reassuring indicator that the watch is running.

Movement

Powering the No. 8 is the automatic Miyota caliber 90S5, augmented by an in-house 62-part module created by Katayama. The 24-jewel movement operates at 4 Hz and has a stated precision of -10/+30 seconds per day. It offers hand winding and stop-seconds functionality. However, the power reserve is a modest 32 hours, lower than Miyota’s standard 42 hours, because the added module draws energy from the mainspring. This is a trade-off for the unique complications, and it’s worth noting for potential owners.
