Anordain Model 1 Porcelain: A Fresh Take on Classic Dial Craft

Anordain’s New Model 1 Porcelain

Anordain, a Scottish watchmaker known for its affordable enamel-dial timepieces, has expanded its lineup with the Model 1 Porcelain. This new model combines a traditional porcelain dial with a bespoke font that reinterprets classic Breguet numerals, showcasing the brand’s attention to design detail.

Porcelain Dial: Old-School Craft, Higher Output

Unlike enamel dials, which are made from melted glass, porcelain is essentially fired clay. Anordain produces these dials in a labor-intensive manner: each dial is individually painted with a clay-based mixture and then fired. While this process is traditional, it allows for greater production volume compared to enamel. According to the brand, one porcelain specialist can produce 30–40 dials per month, whereas seven enamellers make about 50 enamel dials monthly. With current staff, Anordain can achieve a monthly output of 300 porcelain dials, though rejection rates can reach 90%.

This increased efficiency means the Model 1 Porcelain is available outside the existing waiting lists for enamel models. Existing clients get a 24-hour head start for ordering, but new customers can also purchase it.

Custom Font and Hands

To complement the porcelain dial, Anordain collaborated with Amsterdam-based graphic designer Kia Tasbihgou to create a new font. The design is a playful, modern take on Breguet numerals, inspired by details found on antique Breguet pocket watches. Founder Lewis Heath noted that a conversation about Breguet’s remarkable details proved pivotal, leading to this serendipitous design direction.

The watch also features new hands that echo Anordain’s syringe-style hands but with a Breguet-inspired hour hand. The ring in the hour hand is modeled on the off-centre “0” of the custom font, adding a subtle, cohesive design touch.

Case and Movement

The Model 1 Porcelain retains the classic 38 mm polished steel case, with a height of 11 mm (partly due to the dial’s thickness). It is powered by the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement, a reliable workhorse favored by many microbrands for its value. For an additional 15% of the price, buyers can upgrade to the La Joux-Perret A1, which is technically identical but features a custom spiral-motif decoration on the bridges and rotor, designed by a Glasgow-based artist exclusively for Anordain.

Buying Tips and Authenticity Notes

The Model 1 Porcelain is priced at US,950 with the standard G101 movement and US,400 with the decorated A1. It is not a limited edition, but only 70 pieces are available initially, with more produced monthly. For replica-watch enthusiasts, this model offers an accessible entry into high-quality dial craftsmanship. When purchasing, verify the dial’s porcelain texture and the custom font details, as these are distinctive features. Ensure you buy from authorized dealers to guarantee authenticity.
