For nearly all modern wristwatches, the crown is the true control center. It handles winding, time setting, and complications like date, day, and GMT functions. While buttons exist on chronographs and perpetual calendars, the crown remains essential. Modern Screw-Down Systems
Today, Rolex Oyster watches use two screw-down systems: Twinlock and Triplock. Some watches feature multiple crowns. The most common is a dual-crown design: one at 2 o'clock for rotating the inner bezel, and one at 4 o'clock for winding and setting. In the 1950s, the Super Compressor dive watch emerged with dual crowns and a spring-loaded case back, offering better protection for the rotating inner bezel than traditional external bezels. Modern examples include the Longines Legend Diver and Baltic Aquascaphe Dual-Crown, though they lack the spring-loaded case back. Crown Types and Shapes
