Hajime Asaoka, the visionary behind Kurono Tokyo, has unveiled a distinctive dive watch that stands out with its dual-case architecture. This design echoes the concept of the Omega Speedmaster Alaska Project, which used an inner and outer case for thermal protection. However, the Kurono Diver's repurposes this idea to enhance water resistance, offering a unique solution for underwater enthusiasts.

The Dual-Case Mechanism

The watch comprises a traditional inner case rated to 50 meters of water resistance. When the outer case is attached, the system achieves a 100-meter rating. Asaoka explains that the primary goal was to address the vulnerability of the crown, a common weak point in dive watches. By removing the crown entirely, the watch becomes more robust and reliable. The high winding efficiency of the automatic movement ensures that the watch rarely stops, minimizing the need for manual winding or time setting.

Design and Materials

The inner case is cushion-shaped, measuring 35 x 35 mm, with a thickness of 9 mm and a lug-to-lug of 37.4 mm. This is the first cushion-shaped case from Kurono Tokyo. With the outer case installed, the dimensions expand to 46 mm in diameter, 13.5 mm thick, and 56.7 mm lug-to-lug, making it the largest case produced by the brand. Both cases are crafted from stainless steel, and the watch is assembled in Japan.

The bezel, made from Extra Super Duralumin, is hard-anodized in a deep red hue, providing excellent contrast with the white engraved indices. It functions as a threaded lid that can be unscrewed counter-clockwise with a dedicated tool, and it also features a unidirectional rotation mechanism—essential for divers to track elapsed time safely.

Powered by the Miyota caliber 90S5, a 4Hz automatic movement with 24 jewels and a 40-hour power reserve, the Kurono Diver's offers reliable performance, though it is not chronometer-certified. The hand set features blued steel in a cathedral design, a rare aesthetic for a dive watch.

The watch comes with a leather strap (19 mm/16 mm) with quick-release pins for easy removal, allowing the watch head to be placed into the outer diving case, which is fitted with a rubber strap (24 mm/22 mm).
