Atelier Wen and Massena LAB Join Forces for a Limited Edition Inflection Shuò
A Meeting of Minds: The Genesis of the Inflection Shuò
In the world of horology, the journey from concept to creation is often a slow and deliberate process, marked by chance encounters and shared visions. This is precisely the story behind the new Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò, a collaborative effort between William Massena, the founder of Massena LAB, and the duo behind Atelier Wen, Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron. Their combined expertise has yielded a timepiece that celebrates both Swiss craftsmanship and Chinese artistic heritage.
The Art of Tremblage: A Dazzling Dial
The name “Shuò” derives from the Chinese character 烁, meaning “sparkling” or “radiant,” a fitting moniker for a dial that showcases the intricate technique of hand tremblage. This demanding decorative craft involves meticulously pushing a graver across a metal surface while continuously oscillating it, creating a textured finish with thousands of tiny irregular facets. For this collaboration, the tremblage work was executed by hand-engraving specialist Coralie Mercier on behalf of GT Cadrans, using an 18-karat gold base. The result is a dial that shimmers and plays with light in a truly unique way.
The dial’s design is a thoughtful blend of Western and Eastern elements. A radially brushed sector in either white gold or rose gold forms a border around the tremblage center, and this smooth ring houses the hour markers. Here, the brands have reimagined the classic California dial layout, pairing custom serif Arabic numerals for hours 10 to 2 with hand-calligraphed Chinese numerals for hours 4 to 8, all filled with blue to match the blued-steel hands. The outer sector is further adorned with tremblage and framed by a finely engraved huiwen border, a traditional Chinese pattern inspired by the character 回.
Challenging Materials: Tantalum Case and Bracelet
Beyond the dial, the Inflection Shuò pushes boundaries with its case and integrated bracelet, both crafted from tantalum—a metal notorious for its difficulty to machine and finish. The design language, inspired by Chinese architecture, emphasizes curves and avoids flat planes, adding to the complexity. The 40mm case is a testament to the skill of the artisans involved. For those who prefer a different look, the watch is also available with a blue or grey sailcloth strap.
Inside the Movement: A Customized Caliber
Powering the Inflection Shuò is a customized caliber GP03300 from Girard-Perregaux. The movement’s bridges feature curved, sweeping lines that draw inspiration from the depiction of wind in historical Chinese paintings, ensuring that the artistry extends beyond the dial. This attention to detail is a hallmark of both Atelier Wen and Massena LAB.
Limited Availability and Pricing
The white gold dial version is reserved exclusively for established clients of either brand, with a production run of just 10 pieces. The rose gold dial variant is available to the public, limited to 40 pieces. Both are priced at ,100. For more information, enthusiasts can visit the official websites of Atelier Wen and Massena LAB.
Buying Tips and Authenticity Notes
Given the limited nature of this release, potential buyers should act quickly and ensure they are purchasing from authorized dealers or directly from the brands to guarantee authenticity. The tantalum case and hand-engraved dial are difficult to replicate, but it’s always wise to verify the movement’s serial number and request documentation. As with any high-end timepiece, consider the after-sales service and warranty offered by the seller.
