Rolex Certified Pre-Owned: A New Era in China

Rolex has officially launched its Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program in mainland China, marking a significant step for the brand's presence in the secondary market. Currently, three authorized dealers offer CPO watches: the Beijing China World store, the Shanghai HKRI Taikoo Hui store, and the Oriental Watch Company at Deji Plaza in Nanjing. We visited the Beijing and Shanghai locations to get a firsthand look at the inventory and pricing.

What Does a Rolex CPO Watch Cost?

When it comes to CPO pricing, it's not just about the model and reference number. The production year, specific configuration, and overall condition play crucial roles. For instance, a 2021 Submariner No-Date (ref. 124060) at the Beijing store is priced at ¥116,900, while a 2017 predecessor (ref. 114060) in Shanghai goes for about ¥109,000. Even the same reference can vary significantly based on these factors.

Popular Models on Display

Beyond the Submariner, we spotted several sought-after pieces. A 2018 two-tone Datejust with diamond markers (ref. 126333) is listed at ¥150,800 in Beijing, while a 2019 version of the same model in Shanghai is slightly cheaper at ¥149,000. For those interested in vintage flair, a 1996 mother-of-pearl dial two-tone Datejust is available for ¥123,000.

Why CPO Watches Command a Premium

On average, Rolex CPO watches carry about a 30% premium over the general secondary market. This premium is justified by the rigorous process each timepiece undergoes. Every CPO watch is inspected, serviced, and refurbished by Rolex itself. When you purchase one, you receive a new box, a new warranty card, and a two-year international guarantee. This ensures that the watch is in top condition, addressing common concerns like service history, accuracy, water resistance, and the use of genuine parts.

How Do CPO Watches Get Certified?

Authorized dealers source these watches by buying them from customers, then send them to Rolex for a comprehensive evaluation and refurbishment. Only after passing Rolex's strict standards do they enter the CPO program for sale.

Can You Sell Your Rolex to the Official Program?

We asked all three stores about selling personal Rolex watches back to the official channel. Currently, the Beijing and Shanghai stores do not accept direct individual sales. However, the Nanjing Deji Plaza store does offer this service, but with two conditions: the watch must have been purchased from an authorized dealer in mainland China, and it must be at least two years old. If you meet these criteria, you can bring your watch to the store for an initial assessment. After that, it's sent to Rolex for a detailed inspection, and you'll receive a final certification report and a buyback quote, which you can accept or decline.

The Bigger Picture: Rolex in the Secondary Market

Globally, the pre-owned watch market is worth around billion, and Rolex alone accounts for approximately .6 billion—about one-third of the total. This dominance underscores Rolex's strong brand influence and liquidity in both new and pre-owned markets. Since the CPO program's launch in 2022, it has grown rapidly, now representing about 11% of Rolex's total pre-owned transactions. As more dealers join, CPO is set to become a major channel for buying and selling Rolex watches.
